Oropeza Drives in Three Runs as Aztecs Baseball Shuts Out Monroe CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (21-13) secured a huge seventh inning to beat Monroe Community College (N.Y.) on Friday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs scored six runs in the inning to enforce the mercy-rule as they beat the Tribunes 10-0 in a non-conference single game.

After a pair of walks and a single to load the bases, sophomore David Oropeza (Nogales HS) stepped up and hit a two-run RBI single to score fellow sophomores Hunter Green (Sahuaro HS) and Jacob Northrup (Sahuaro HS) to make it 6-0. Sophomore Ryan Ramsower (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a two-run RBI double to plate Oropeza and sophomore Ivan Estrella (Tucson Magnet HS). Freshman Manny Ramirez (Bisbee HS) ended the game with an RBI single to score Ramsower.

Oropeza put the Aztecs on the board in the second inning with an RBI double to score freshman Myles Moran. Oropeza finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Ramsower went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Estrella was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Freshman Anthony Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the seventh inning and was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Ramirez finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored and Larranaga went 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. The Aztecs had 14 hits and drew six walks in the game.

Freshman Jacob Roberson picked up his first win of the season (1-0) after he pitched five shutout innings. He gave up three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Fellow freshman Jacob Frithsen (Pusch Ridge HS) closed out the game throwing the final two innings giving up one hit with one strikeout.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday against South Mountain Community College in doubleheader at the West Campus. The games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m.
