Gage Mestas goes 4 for 5 as Aztecs baseball beats College of Southern Nevada to close Zinger Classic

The Pima Community College baseball team (8-2) bounced back in the final day of the Zinger Classic on Sunday at Sloan Park.

  • The Aztecs scored runs in five straight innings to beat the College of Southern Nevada 9-5.
  • Down 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Aztecs responded when sophomore Jose Enriquez grounded out but scored pitcher-runner Braedon Mondeau (Cienega HS). Freshman Andrew Stucky (Canyon del Oro HS) followed with an RBI single to plate freshman Gage Mestas to tie it at 2-2.
  • The Aztecs rallied again in the bottom of the 4th inning after surrendering two runs in the top half of the inning. Sophomore Fernando Loera hit a lead-off double. He scored on freshman Joey Adge's RBI single. Mondeau came in to pinch run and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4. Mestas hit a single in the inning with two outs and took advantage of Southern Nevada's miscues scoring on a passed ball to put the Aztecs ahead 5-4.
  • Mestas hit an RBI double in the 6th inning to score sophomore Preston Clifford (Sabino HS) and he scored a run to make it 8-4 on sophomore Emilio Corona's fielder's choice.
  • Mestas added more insurance in the 7th inning with an RBI single to plate sophomore Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS).
  • Mestas finished the game 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Adge went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a walk while Stucky was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Mondeau scored two runs and Corona finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run and two walks.
  • Sophomore Bodhi Bolen picked up the win in relief (1-0) as he pitched two and two-third innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with four strikeouts.
  • The Aztecs begin ACCAC conference play on Saturday when they head to Central Arizona College in Coolidge. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
