Shackelford has three RBIs; Drake, Roberts and Richie combine for no earned runs and 14K's as Baseball sweeps Yavapai College

The Aztecs baseball team has won 10 straight games after sweeping Yavapai College to open ACCAC conference play. Sophomore David Shackelford (center) went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a walk on the day while starting pitchers J.T. Drake and Maclain Roberts had solid outings on the mound, and along with freshman Auggie Richie, combined to give up no earned runs, no walks with 14 strikeouts. The Pima Community College baseball team (12-2, 2-0 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Saturday against Yavapai College (6-6, 0-2) at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.
The Aztecs became winners of 10 straight games as they earned the doubleheader sweep over the Roughriders. Sophomore David Shackelford finished the day 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a walk while sophomore Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
The pitching staff of sophomore J.T. Drake, freshman Maclain Roberts and freshman Auggie Richie (Sabino HS) shut down the Roughriders allowing no earned runs and no walks with 14 strikeouts.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 2, Yavapai College Roughriders 1: The Aztecs scored two runs in the early innings and held off a rally from Yavapai.
    Shackelford put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI single in the 1st inning to score sophomore Antonio Avila, who hit a lead-off single.
    The connection of Shackelford and Avila was at it again in the 3rd inning. With Avila on second base and two outs, Shackelford came through again with an RBI triple to left field to drive him in and make it 2-0.
    Shackelford and Avila accounted for four of Pima's six hits for the game. Shackelford finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Avila finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Freshman Chase Cummings was 1 for 3 and Reeves finished 1 for 2.
    Drake pitched a seven-inning complete game, giving up one run (none earned) on five hits with three strikeouts on 66 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Yavapai College Roughriders 0: The Aztecs picked up the win as Roberts pitched seven shutout frames, giving up five hits with eight strikeouts. Richie closed it out, throwing the final two innings and giving up two hits with three strikeouts.
    The Aztecs got on the board in the 2nd inning with two runs. Avila hit a double with one out and scored on Cummings' RBI double. After sophomore Caleb Herd's (Cienega HS) single moved him over, Reeves hit a sacrifice-fly RBI and brought Cummings in to make it 2-0.
    The Aztecs added a little insurance in the 5th inning when Shackelford hit an RBI single to plate sophomore Nick Arias (Tucson Magnet HS).
    Shackelford finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk while Cummings was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run and a walk. Arias closed out the game going 3 for 5 with a run. Avila was 1 for 4 with a run and Reeves finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host Arizona Christian University. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
