Aztecs football score 30 unanswered points to beat Phoenix College

The Pima Community College football team put on another impressive performance on Saturday in its Western States Football League (WSFL) opener.

The Aztecs defeated Phoenix College 54-14 at Kino North Stadium scoring the final 30 points of the game. Pima has scored a total of 137 points in two games with 74 points coming in the second quarter alone.

Phoenix College scored on the first drive of the game but the Aztecs responded with 24 unanswered points. Freshman kicker Nathan Farmer (Ironwood Ridge HS) put the Aztecs on the board with a 25-yard field goal. Freshman Antonio Hinojosa (Mountain Pointe HS) (pictured) threw two touchdown passes during that stretch; one to Timmy Hernandez (Mountain Pointe HS) for 15-yards and one to Tristen Foley for 4-yards.

Up 17-7 and Phoenix College almost at mid-field, Landry Payne (Mountain Pointe HS) picked off quarterback Nick Duckworth. The Aztecs marched 76 yards on 11 plays capped off by Deontay Townsend's (Mountain Pointe HS) 4-yard touchdown run to make it 24-7 with 12:33 left in the second quarter.

Phoenix College scored to make it 24-14 with 9:44 left in the quarter but from that point, the Aztecs poured it on. Hernandez intercepted a Duckworth pass and returned it 13-yards for the score. Then Pima scored on a safety and on the ensuing kickoff, Payne returned it 103-yards for the score to make it 40-14 at the 6:35 mark. The Aztecs led 47-14 at halftime after Townsend scored his second rushing touchdown.

Isaiah Birkell (Boulder Creek HS) scored the only touchdown for the Aztecs in the second half when he picked off Phoenix College quarterback Josh Eckley and returned it 18-yards for the score.

Hinojosa threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns as the Aztecs racked up over 500 yards of total offense.

The Aztecs will play their first road game of the season next Saturday when travel to Thatcher, AZ against Eastern Arizona College.
