Aztecs men's basketball decimate Mesa CC to end losing streak
The Pima Community College men's basketball (12-6, 6-4 in ACCAC) got back on track on Wednesday against Mesa Community College (12-5, 7-3).
The Aztecs (Division II) dominated the Thunderbirds (Division I) in their 115-78 win, snapping their three-game losing streak. The win gave coach Brian Peabody his first win against Mesa in four years.
The Aztecs led the whole game as they started out on a 7-0 run. The Thunderbirds cut the lead to two points but Pima maintained the advantage. Pima closed out the first half on a 12-2 run to go up 50-32 at the break.
The Aztecs continued to dictate the pace of the game and went up by as much as 39 points. They outscored the Thunderbirds 65-46 for the second half.
Sophomore Emilio Acedo (Salpointe Catholic HS) led the way with 26 points as he went 8 for 13 from three-point range. Fellow sophomore Jacob Anastasi (Cactus Shadows HS) went 8 for 9 from the field and finished with 23 points. He was also 4 for 4 from behind the three-point line.
Sophomore Deion James (Empire HS) produced his 10th double-double of the season as he finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Zach Evans (Hamilton HS) also had a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists. Sophomore Javon Peterson contributed with 11 points off the bench.
The Aztecs will head back out on the road on Saturday when they play at Arizona Western College in Yuma at 7:30 p.m.
