Johnathon Lane sets national qualifier in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at Canyon Invitational

The Pima Community College men's and women's track & field teams competed in their final regular season meet on Saturday as part of the Canyon Invitational held at Grand Canyon University.

  • Freshman Johnathon Lane (Walden Grove HS) earned a national qualifying time in his third event of the Outdoor Season. He took second place (first among ACCAC competitors) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 21.47 seconds. Lane's time puts him No. 3 unofficially in the NJCAA. It is the best time produced by a Pima athlete since Alejandro Valencia's time of 9:20.31 set back in 2013. Lane has set national qualifying times in the 5,000-meter (14:32.67) and the 1,500-meter (3:59.92) races.
  • Sophomore Joel Gardner (Ironwood Ridge HS) took third place in the 1,500-meter race and set a new Pima career-best with a time of 3:52.43. His previous-best of 3:54.23 was set at the ACCAC Conference Championships.
  • Freshman Abraham Valenzuela (Palo Verde HS) also set a new Pima career-record in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:56.85. His previous qualifier was set at 3:59.60.
  • Sophomore Trey Tintinger placed third in the High Jump as he improved on his national qualifier with a jump of 2.10 meters (6-feet, 10.75-inches). His previous-best for the Outdoor Season was 2.07 meters (6-9.5). His Pima career-best is 2.11 meters (6-11).
  • Sophomore Nathan Jones (Show Low HS) took fourth place in the Shot Put and threw a personal-record and Pima career-best of 15.13 meters (49-7.75).
  • In women's competition, freshman Brooke Peterson (Mingus HS) placed fifth in the Pole Vault (first among ACCAC competitors) as she set a new personal Pima-best vault of 3.76 meters (12-4). Her previous qualifier for the Outdoor Season was set at 3.68 meters (12-0.75) and her previous Pima career record was 3.75 meters (12-3.50).

The Aztecs will compete at the Region I Multi's Championships on Monday and Tuesday at Mesa Community College.
