Patterson and Valenzuela break indoor school records, Lewis and Preble set qualifiers at NAU Tune-Up

The Pima Community College men's track & field team set two new NJCAA national qualifying marks and another two indoor school records fell on Friday at the NAU Tune-Up Meet in Flagstaff, AZ.

  • The No. 8 ranked Aztecs close out the Indoor Season with 19 national qualifying times and marks.
  • Sophomore Nicholas Patterson (Poston Butte HS) took third place in the 60-meter hurdles and broke the Pima school indoor record with a time of 8.37 seconds. He broke Cornelius Payne's record of 8.45 set in 2017.
  • Sophomore Abraham Valenzuela (Palo Verde HS) improved on two of his national qualifiers and took down his own indoor school record in the one-mile race by more than six seconds. He finished with a time of 4:06.40; an improvement from his previous record-breaking time of 4:12.94. He took first place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.78. His previous time was 1:53.80. He also has qualifiers in the 3,000 meters and the Distance Medley Relay.
  • Sophomore Wyatt Preble (Salpointe Catholic HS) set a national qualifier in the 800-meter race as he took second place with a time of 1:55.86.
  • Freshman Kolby Lewis (Basha HS) is the third men's pole vaulter to set a national qualifying mark. He set his qualifier with a vault of 4.45 meters (14-feet, 7.25-inches). His fellow vaulters improved on their qualifiers. Freshman Carter Huntsman cleared a vault of 4.60 meters (15-1) and improved his previous mark of 4.40 meters (14-5.25). Freshman Adam McCoy finished with a vault of 4.30 meters (14-1.25), which was an improvement from 4.24 meters (13-11).
  • Freshman Darlington Onsarigo (Mica Mountain HS) improved on his national qualifying mark in the Triple Jump as he took third place with a jump of 14.39 meters (47-2.50). He improved from 14.29 meters (46-10.75).

The Aztecs will compete at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 1-2 at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainsville, FL.
