Alfonso earns two wins and Cuestas has 4 RBIs in softball's sweep at Scottsdale

The Pima Community College softball team (22-6, 17-5 in ACCAC) earned a sweep on the road at Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) pitched 12 innings on the day and provided an offense spark in the first game. Sierra Cuestas (Marana HS) had four RBIs and two runs scored for the day. The Aztecs swept the season series against Scottsdale as they won two games at Pima in February.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored five runs in the 4th inning and went on to win the first game 12-2 in five innings. Alfonso (11-2) picked up the win after she pitched five innings giving up two runs on four hits with three walks. She also provided some offense as she went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and two walks while Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Cuestas was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored and Christina Olivas (Hamilton HS) was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2

Alfonso (12-2) gained her second win of the day in Pima's 4-2 win in the second game. She pitched a complete-game giving up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Down 1-0 in the 5th inning, the Aztecs took the lead when Cuestas hit a two-run homer to put Pima up 2-1. Ayala scored the other run after she hit a triple earlier in the inning. Hernandez hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 6th inning and Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) helped seal it with a two-out RBI single in the 7th inning to make it 4-2. Cuestas finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) finished the game 3 for 4 with a run scored and a triple. Ayala was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a triple.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host GateWay Community College in a ACCAC Conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
