Martinez has 5 RBIs, 4 runs as softball sweeps GateWay

The Pima Community College softball team (24-6, 19-5 in ACCAC) earned a conference sweep on Saturday at the West Campus against GateWay Community College.

The Aztecs had some bright spots on offense as Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) had five RBIs and four runs scored on the day while Ariana Murrieta (Catalina Foothills HS) drew four walks and scored three runs. Pitchers Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) and Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs scored five runs in the 2nd inning and tacked on another six in the 3rd inning as the Aztecs run-ruled GateWay 11-0 in five innings. Martinez hit a two-run RBI single which was followed by a two-run RBI double by Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) in the 2nd inning. Alfonso hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Martinez finished with three RBIs and two runs scored for the game. Murrieta went 1 for 1 with two runs scored and two walks.

Alfonso went 2 for 3 with an RBI and also threw a shutout. She pitched all five innings giving up one hit with seven strikeouts. She improved to 13-2 on the season.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 1 (5 innings)

The Aztecs fell behind early but responded by scoring seven runs in the 2nd inning to win 9-1 in five innings. Down 1-0 after the top of the 1st, Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) and Paige Castro each hit RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning to put Pima up 2-1. In the 2nd inning, Taylor Fabing hit a two-run RBI double while Ayala and Sierra Cuestas (Marana HS) followed with RBI doubles of their own.

Fabing finished 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a walk. Ayala was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Martinez had two RBIs and two runs scored. Murrieta went 1 for 1 with a run scored and two walks.

Orduno (7-2) threw all five innings giving up one run (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
