Cuestas has 6 RBIs as softball sweeps Chandler-Gilbert

The Pima Community College softball team (26-6, 21-5 in ACCAC) continued to roll on Tuesday as the Aztecs earned a sweep against Chandler-Gilbert Community at the West Campus.

The Aztecs have won 15 of their last 17 games and were led by Sierra Cuestas (Marana HS), who went 4 for 6 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) was 5 for 7 with five RBIs and five runs scored and Taylor Fabing finished the day 3 for 5 with three RBIs and six runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 3 (5 innings):

The Aztecs belt three home runs in the first game to defeat Chandler-Gilbert 11-3. Up 3-1 in the 3rd inning, Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a three-run homer and Cuestas followed with a solo homer to make it 7-1. Up 7-3 in the 4th inning, Hernandez hit an RBI triple and scored on Fabing's two-run homer to put the Aztecs up 10-3. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) hit into a fielder's choice in the 5th inning to score pinch-runner Morgan Engelhardt which ended the game.

Alfonso went 1 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Cuestas and Hernandez each finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Fabing was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Alfonso picked up the win (14-2) after she pitched all five innings giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs started off quickly scoring four runs in the 1st inning and another five in the 3rd inning to help them win the second game 12-0 in five innings. Sierra Cuestas hit a two-run RBI double in the 3rd inning while Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) and Hernandez each hit RBI singles in the inning. Cuestas and Olivas also each hit RBI singles in the 2nd inning. Cuestas went 2 for 3 with four RBIs while Olivas was 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Hernandez was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Fabing was 1 for 3 with three runs scored.

Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) and Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) combined to throw a four-hit shutout. Orduno (8-2) picked up the win after she pitched four innings giving up two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Ayala pitched the 5th inning and gave up two hits with one strikeout.

The Aztecs are off until next Tuesday (Mar. 24) when they play at Yavapai College in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
