Alfonso homers and earns win as softball splits at Yavapai

The Pima Community College softball team (27-7, 22-6 in ACCAC) won its seventh straight game but lost in the second game of the doubleheader at Yavapai College.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Yavapai College Roughriders 1

The Aztecs fell behind after the 1st inning but came back to beat Yavapai 3-1 in the first game. Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) earned the win improving her record to 15-2 as she pitched a complete-game giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Alfonso tied the game in the 2nd inning when she hit a solo home run. Taylor Fabing gave the Aztecs the lead with her RBI that scored Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS). Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) also had an RBI in the 3rd inning. Olivas scored two runs and drew a walk for the game. Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) finished 2 for 4 with a double.

Game 2: Yavapai College Roughriders 4, Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs had their seven-game winning streak snapped after dropping the second game 4-2. Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) took the loss (8-3). She pitched a complete-game and gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Pima fell behind 3-1 after the 5th inning and scored one run in the 6th but the rally was cut short. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double while Olivas was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a double. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) finished the game 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The Aztecs will play at Mesa Community College on Saturday in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
