Alfonso throws two shutouts as softball sweeps Glendale

The Pima Community College softball team (29-9, 24-8 in ACCAC) got back on track on Tuesday as it snapped a three-game losing streak with a sweep at Glendale Community College.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) threw two shutouts on the day pitching 10 innings, giving up seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. She also contributed on offense in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Glendale CC Gauchos 0 (5 innings):

The Aztecs scored four runs in each the 2nd and 3rd innings in their 10-0 win in five innings. Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the 2nd and Taylor Fabing hit a two-run homer in the 5th to help the Aztecs seal the win. Hunter went 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a stolen base while Fabing was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Alfonso (16-3) picked up the win as she pitched five innings giving up five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Glendale CC Gauchos 0 (5 innings):

The Aztecs' offense started off quick again in the early innings as they scored three runs in each the 1st and 3rd innings. Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) hit a two-run RBI triple in the 1st while Alfonso hit a two-run home run in the 3rd inning. Olivas was 1 for 1 with three RBIs and a run scored while Alfonso finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI while Martinez was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Alfonso (17-3) pitched another five-inning shutout giving up two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host a conference doubleheader against South Mountain Community College. Games will be at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
