Olivas' timely hitting propels softball in sweep at No. 2 Phoenix College

The Pima Community College softball team (33-9, 28-8 in ACCAC) won a huge conference doubleheader on Tuesday as the Aztecs swept No. 2 Phoenix College in Phoenix.

The Aztecs snapped Phoenix's 22-game winning streak and handed them their first sweep of the season. Pima took three of the four games played in the regular season.

Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) was a big part of Pima's offensive production as she went 4 for 6 with four RBIs, three runs scored and a home run. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) also had a great day at the plate as she went 4 for 7 with three RBIs, a run scored and a home run.

Game 1: (10) Pima CC Aztecs 9, (2) Phoenix College Bears 8:

The Aztecs got to the Phoenix College pitching early and had to hold off a late rally in their 9-8 win in the first game. In the first inning, the Aztecs scored seven runs to take an early lead. Olivas hit a two-run RBI single while Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS), Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) each hit an RBI single in the inning. Ayala hit an RBI double in the 5th inning to put Pima up 8-2 and Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS) hit an RBI single in the 7th to make it 9-4.

Phoenix College came back to four runs with one out in the bottom of the 7th. Ayala got a runner out between third base and home plate and Montoya's throw to second base got another runner out to end the game. Olivas was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Ayala finished 2 for 4 with an RBI. Hunter was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Martinez went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) picked up her 20th win of the season (20-3) as she pitched seven innings giving up eight runs (eight earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2: (10) Pima CC Aztecs 6, (2) Phoenix College Bears 4:

Olivas hit a three-run home run to put the Aztecs up for good in the 7th inning in their 6-4 win in the second game. Down 4-3, Ayala and Hunter hit back-to-back singles to open the 7th to set up Olivas' shot.

Down 2-0 in the 4th inning, the Aztecs tied the game with Ayala's two-run homer that also scored Taylor Fabing. Phoenix went back up 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the 4th. Araceli Peralta hit a groundout RBI to score pinch runner Morgan Engelhardt in the 5th.

Olivas went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Ayala finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Peralta was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (9-4) as she pitched seven innings giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will be on the road on Thursday when they play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in a conference doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
