Alfonso's shutout and Engelhardt's hit help softball sweep El Paso CC

The Pima Community College softball team (39-9, 32-8 in ACCAC) earned a sweep on Tuesday against Division I team El Paso Community College at the West Campus.

While the No. 4 ranked Aztecs (in Division II) played in non-conference games, they found themselves tied for the top spot in the ACCAC Conference standings after Phoenix College was swept by Eastern Arizona College.

Game 1: (4) Pima CC Aztecs 5, El Paso CC Tejanas 0:

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) earned her 23rd win of the season (23-3) after she threw a complete-game shutout in Pima's 5-0 win in the first game. She gave up six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Alfonso did work at the plate as well as she hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning. Pima scored three runs in the 2nd inning that was capped off by Kalynn Martinez's (Sunnyside HS) RBI single. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS), Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS) and Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) each scored a run in the inning. Martinez and Alfonso each went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 2: (4) Pima CC Aztecs 5, El Paso CC Tejanas 3:

The Aztecs got a boost from Morgan Engelhardt in the 6th inning as they won the second game 5-3. Down 3-2 in the 6th, Engelhardt hit a two-run RBI single to give Pima the lead for good. Martinez followed with an RBI single of her own to drive in Engelhardt, who finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Martinez went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Taylor Fabing was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Ayala (3-0) picked up the win after she threw a complete-game giving up three runs (none earned) on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC Conference play on Saturday when they host Central Arizona College at the West Campus. Games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
