Ayala and Alfonso each have 4 RBIs as Aztecs softball sweeps Central Arizona

The Pima Community College softball team (41-9, 34-8 in ACCAC) dominated in two very different games against Central Arizona College on Saturday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs have won 14 straight and remain in a tie for first place with Phoenix College in the ACCAC Conference standings.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) did her damage on the mound in the first game and from the plate in the second game. Sierra Cuestas (Marana HS) went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor Fabing was 2 for 5 with four runs scored and an RBI. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) finished 2 for 7 on the day with four RBIs.

Game 1: (3) Pima CC Aztecs 8, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 0 (6 innings):

Alfonso threw a shutout for her 24th win of the season in Pima's 8-0 win in six innings. She gave up three hits with five strikeouts.

Up 1-0, the Aztecs took control by scoring six runs in the 5th inning. Ayala and Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) each hit two-run RBI singles and Cuestas added an RBI single of her own. Cuestas went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, a run scored and two walks while Hernandez finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ayala was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Fabing went 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks.

Game 2: (3) Pima CC Aztecs 13, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 5 (6 innings):

The Aztecs rallied in the second game as they beat Central Arizona 13-5 in six innings. Central Arizona got to Alfonso in the 1st inning as they took a 4-0 lead. Pima responded right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brianna Quiroz (Tucson Magnet HS) led off the 2nd inning with a solo home run. Cuestas hit an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4 and Alfonso hit a two-run RBI single to put the Aztecs up 6-4 in the 2nd inning. Up 8-5 in the 4th, Ayala hit a two-run RBI single which was followed by Christine Olivas' (Hamilton HS) RBI single to make it 10-5. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) hit a fielder's choice that scored Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) to end the game. Pima scored in every inning.

Alfonso went 3 for 3 with four RBIs while Martinez finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ayala was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Fabing finished 1 for 3 with three runs scored and a walk. Quiroz was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Alfonso picked up her 25th win of the season as she gave up five runs (none earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs have one more week of regular season play. They'll play at Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday in Thatcher. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
