(3) Aztecs softball fall at Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team (41-11, 3410 in ACCAC) got swept on the road against Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday in Thatcher.

The first loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for the Aztecs and put an end to pitcher Alexis Alfonso's (Canyon del Oro HS) 10 straight wins on the mound.

Game 1: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 6, (3) Pima CC Aztecs 3

The Aztecs fell behind and rallied in the 6th inning but came up short in their 6-3 loss in the first game. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) put Pima on the board in the 1st inning with an RBI single but Eastern Arizona scored three runs in the 2nd inning and one in the 3rd. Down 4-1 in the 6th, the Aztecs cut into the lead when Alfonso hit a solo home run. Later, Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS) hit an RBI triple to cut it to 4-3. Eastern Arizona came right back in the bottom of the 6th and scored two runs on a throwing error to first base.

Alfonso finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Hunter went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Hernandez was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Alfonso (25-4) suffered her first loss since Mar. 28 as she pitched six innings giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Game 2: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 10, (3) Pima CC Aztecs 2 (6 innings)

The Aztecs took an early lead but Eastern Arizona scored five runs in the 4th inning, two in the 5th and three in the 6th. Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) scored the runs for Pima in the 3rd inning; both on errors. Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) went 2 for 3 while Hernandez finished 1 for 2 with two stolen bases.

Ayala suffered her first loss on the mound (3-1) as she pitched six innings giving up 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs continue their busy week on Thursday when they play a make-up doubleheader at Central Arizona College. The games in Coolidge will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
