Alfonso's 3-run blast lifts Aztecs softball past South Mountain in first day of Regionals

The Pima Community College softball team (45-12) were in a shootout on Friday in the first day of the Region I, Division II Tournament at Phoenix College.

The No. 2 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 3 South Mountain Community College 12-9 to advance in the winner's bracket.

Down 9-8 heading into the seventh inning, Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) hit an RBI double to plate Peralta and tie the game 9-9. Taylor Fabing drew a walk and that set up Alexis Alfonso's (Canyon del Oro HS) three-run blast to right field to win the game.

The Aztecs found themselves down early after South Mountain scored three runs in the first inning. Pima responded in the bottom half of the inning when Fabing hit a three-run homer to left field to tie it at 3-3. Fabing stepped up again in the second inning when she belt a two-run home run to center field as part of a five-run inning to put Pima up 8-3.

South Mountain came back scoring four runs in the 3rd inning and two in the 4th to take the lead at 9-8.

Fabing finished the game 2 for 3 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored. Alfonso went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hernandez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) was 3 for 5 with two runs.

Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (12-4) in relief. She went five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs play the winner of the Phoenix College/Paradise Valley Community College. The winner's bracket game will be tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
