Aztecs softball take second place at Region I, Division II Tournament

The Pima Community College softball team (46-14) closed out its 2015 season on Saturday at Phoenix College.

The Aztecs played three games against Phoenix College but dropped the final two to finish second place for the Region I, Division II Tournament.

Game 3: (1) Phoenix College 11, (2) Pima CC Aztecs 1 (Championship game):

In the final championship game, the Aztecs could not stop the Phoenix College offense in their 11-1 loss. Phoenix went on to score three runs in each the 4th and 5th innings and four in the 6th to take a commanding lead. The Aztecs got their run in the top of the 6th when Taylor Fabing hit an RBI single to score Keona Hunter (Santa Rita HS), who hit a triple in the previous at-bat.

Alexis Alfonso (Canyon del Oro HS) took the loss as she finished the season with a 27-7 record.

Game 2: (1) Phoenix College 6, (2) Pima CC Aztecs 2 (Championship round):

In the second game, first championship round game of the day, the Aztecs struck first but could not put together a rally in the later innings. Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) scored a run off an error in the first inning and Alfonso belted a solo home run in the 2nd inning to give Pima the 2-0 lead.

Phoenix College came back with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd and three in the 6th. The Aztecs finished the game with four hits. Alfonso went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) was 1 for 2. Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) and Alexis Ayala (Sunnyside HS) each went 1 for 3.

Alfonso took the loss (27-6) after she pitched the first three innings giving up three runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout and six walks.

Game 1: (2) Pima CC Aztecs 7, (1) Phoenix College Bears 0 (Winner's bracket):

The Aztecs moved into the championship round after shutting out Phoenix College 7-0. Alfonso pitched a complete-game giving up five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

The offense broke open a scoreless game in the 4th inning when Olivas hit an RBI double to score Fabing. Brianna Quiroz (Tucson Magnet HS) followed with a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Alfonso. Jackie Hernandez (Desert Ridge HS) and Fabing had back-to-back RBI hits in the 5th to make it 4-0. The Aztecs sealed it in the 7th with three runs. Fabing and Alfonso hit back-to-back RBI singles and Alyssa Montoya drew a bases loaded walk.

This was Pima's first year playing in Division II. They went from 29-30 in 2014 to 46-14.
