Aztecs Softball Goes 2-1 in First Day of Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic

The Pima Community College softball team opened their 2016 season by playing three games on Friday as part of the College of Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic in Henderson, NV. The No. 9 ranked Aztecs went 2-1 for the day.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 11, College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles 3 (6 innings):

The Aztecs broken open a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 5th inning with five runs. They tacked on three runs in the 6th to close it out. Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a home run in the sixth inning and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Fellow freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (1-0) as she pitched the final two innings in relief with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Bailey Critchlow started and went four innings giving up three runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Western Nevada College Wildcats 5, Pima CC Aztecs 4

The Aztecs scored two runs in the 1st inning but the Wildcats came back with three in the 2nd inning and forced the Aztecs to play catch up the rest of the game. Corona went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Bailey Pavelich (Cienega HS) was 1 for 1 with an RBI. Sophomores Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) each scored a run and drew a walk.

Orduno started but took the loss (1-1) after she went two and one-third innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) closed out the game going three and two-third innings giving up one run (none earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.

Game 3: Pima CC Aztecs 14, El Paso CC Tejanos 1 (5 innings)

The Aztecs broke open a close game in the fourth inning with 13 runs and 10 hits. Brown had a three-run home run in the 4th inning and Martinez had a two-run RBI hit. Brown finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Martinez went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Critchlow went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and also got the win on the mound (1-0). She pitched five innings giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will conclude play in the College of Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic tomorrow. They'll play Colorado Northwestern Community College at 10:30 a.m., then Salt Lake Community College at 1:00 p.m. and finish against Snow College at 6:00 p.m.
