Aztecs Softball Win Shootout vs. Snow College; Struggle in Early Games at Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic

The Pima Community College softball team (3-3) closed out the final day of competition at the College of Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic on Saturday in Henderson, NV. The No. 9 ranked Aztecs went 1-2 for the day.

Game 1: Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 8, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs managed just two hits for the game as the Spartans scored six runs in the 1st inning. Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) and sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) each went 1 for 2.

Freshman pitcher Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) took the loss (0-1) after she pitched two innings giving up six runs (two earned) on five hits.

Game 2: Salt Lake CC Bruins 16, Pima CC Aztecs 4 (5 innings)

The Aztecs fell behind early again as the No. 5 ranked Bruins scored six runs in the 1st inning and seven runs in the 2nd. The Aztecs got on the scoreboard with a run in the 2nd and three runs in the 4th inning.

Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) went 1 for 1 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshmen Bailey Pavelich (Cienega HS), Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) and Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) each had an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Bailey Critchlow drew two walks as she went 0 for 1 from the plate. She took the loss (1-1) on the mound as she pitched one and one-third innings giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on four hits with three walks.

Game 3: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Snow College Badgers 10 (8 innings)

Sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) scored on a bases loaded walk by fellow sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) in the top of the 8th inning. Critchlow had her two strikeouts for the game in the bottom-half of the 8th as Pima won a wild final game of the kick-off classic.

The Aztecs trailed 6-1 heading into the top of the 6th inning but rallied by scoring four in the 6th inning and five in the 7th. Olivas hit a two-run home run to put the Aztecs up 7-6 in the 7th inning. Pima went up 10-6 after the inning was over but the Badgers scored four runs in the bottom half to tie at 10-10.

Brown went 2 for 4 with four RBIs while Olivas finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Peralta was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Martinez finished 2 for 5 with two runs scored.

Critchlow drew three walks and was 1 for 2 with a run scored. She picked up the win (2-1) after she pitched a complete-game giving up 10 runs on 13 hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs will begin ACCAC conference on Tuesday at Scottsdale Community College. The games will be at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
