Aztecs Softball Open Conference Play with Doubleheader Sweep at Scottsdale

The Pima Community College softball team (5-3, 2-0 in ACCAC) opened up ACCAC conference play on Tuesday at Scottsdale Community College.

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs earned a doubleheader sweep as freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) went 3 for 7 with four RBIs and three runs scored on the day. Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) and freshman Bailey Critchlow picked up wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 3, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2

Freshman Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) hit the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 7th inning which drove in fellow freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS). Brown hit a two-run homer in the top of the 5th inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Artichokes took the lead with two runs in the 4th inning.

Brown finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Orduno (2-1) pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 4

The Aztecs took a 6-0 lead with two runs in the 1st inning and four runs in the 2nd. Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the 1st inning and had a sacrifice RBI in the 2nd. Brown hit a two-run RBI single of her own as part of the 2nd inning.

Corona went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and a walk while Brown finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomores Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) and Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) each went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Peralta had two stolen bases and scored in the 2nd inning. Trejo hit a sacrifice-RBI in the 7th inning.

Critchlow (3-1) pitched a complete-game giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will host their home opener on Saturday against Yavapai College. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
