Aztecs Softball Drops Doubleheader vs. Yavapai College

The Pima Community College softball team (5-5, 2-2 in ACCAC) suffered two losses in its home opener at the West Campus on Saturday.

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs manufactured 13 hits but just three runs on the day against Yavapai College (7-1, 2-0). Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) was a bright spot on offense. Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) and freshman Bailey Critchlow took the losses on the mound.

Game 1: Yavapai College Roughriders 5, Pima CC Aztecs 1

The Aztecs tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Brown hit an RBI double to score sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS). Peralta reach on an error earlier in the inning. The Roughriders took the lead for good with two runs in each the 5th and 6th innings. Pima managed three more hits after the 3rd.inning.

Brown finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk while Peralta was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a walk. Pima had six hits for the game.

Orduno (2-2) took the loss after she pitched a complete game giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: Yavapai College Roughriders 3, Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs led 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't hold on. After giving up a leadoff single, Critchlow struck out the next two batters. That was follow by a single and a two-run RBI double to put Yavapai up for good. The Aztecs left two runners on base to end the game.

Pima took an early lead when Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI double to plate Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS). The Aztecs took the lead again at 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd when Brown hit an RBI double to score Gabriela Trejo (Hamilton HS).

Martinez went 3 for 4 with a run scored while Brown was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Corona finished 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Critchlow (3-2) pitched a complete game giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will look to rebound when they play at Mesa Community College on Tuesday. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
