Olivas' Game-Winning Hit Secures Softball Sweep Against South Mountain

The Pima Community College softball team (11-5, 8-2 in ACCAC) played two very different games but managed to pick up the ACCAC doubleheader sweep on Tuesday against South Mountain Community College (4-6, 2-4).

Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) and sophomores Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) and Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) had the game-changing hits for the day while sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) and Bailey Critchlow picked up the wins on the mounds.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, South Mountain CC Cougars 0 (5 innings)

Brown hit a two-run RBI triple in the 5th inning to seal the run rule victory. Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) and Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) scored the runs to cap off a five-run inning. Brown also hit an RBI single in the 4th inning to score Peralta.

Freshman Gabriella Gorosave put the Aztecs on the scoreboard with an RBI double in the 2nd inning to plate Critchlow.

Brown finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs while Crichlow went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI single in the 5th inning. Gorosave was 1 for 1 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Peralta finished 1 for 2 with two runs scored and Trejo was 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Orduno picked up the win (5-2) after she pitched five innings giving up one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 5, South Mountain CC Cougars 4

Olivas hit a game-winning two-run RBI single to score freshman Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) and Brown with no outs in the 7th inning. Tom led off the inning with a walk and Brown reached base on an error. Freshman Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson Magnet HS) loaded the bases with her walk.

In the 6th inning, with Pima trailing 3-1, Olivas hit a leadoff double and Crichlow reached base on a bunt single, but a throwing error put her at second base. Peralta stepped up and beat out an infield hit to score runs and tie it at 3-3. The Cougars came back with a run in the top of the 7th which set up the bottom half of the inning.

Olivas finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Peralta also went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Crichlow improved to 6-2 on the mound as she pitched a complete-game giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will play an ACCAC doubleheader at Phoenix College on Saturday. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m. The Bears won two straight over the Aztecs to claim the Region I, Division II title last season.
