Aztecs Softball Drop Doubleheader at No. 1 Phoenix College

The Pima Community College softball team (11-7, 8-4 in ACCAC) dropped two games on the road on Saturday against No. 1 ranked Phoenix College (14-1, 9-1).

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs struggled with 11 errors on the day and had a rally cut short in the first game while the Bears won the second game in the final inning. Sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) had a good day at the plate going 5 for 7 with three RBIs.

Game 1: Phoenix College Bears 11, Pima CC Aztecs 7

The Aztecs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback in the end. The Bears took a 4-0 lead after the first inning but the Aztecs came back with three runs in the 3rd. Phoenix College scored another four runs in the 4th inning to widened its lead to 8-3.

Olivas hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning and an RBI single in the 7th as she finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Bailey Critchlow hit a solo homer in the 6th inning and went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) took the loss (5-3) as she pitched four innings giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Phoenix College Bears 3, Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs led until the seventh inning when the Bears hit a two-run walk-off home run to win it.

The Aztecs took the lead in the second inning when freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) scored on a fielder's choice play. Olivas hit an RBI single to score Brown to make it 2-0 in the 5th inning. Olivas went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Martinez also went 2 for 4.

Critchlow pitched a great game but took the loss (6-3) as she went six and one-third innings giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Aztecs will play at Paradise Valley Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
