Corona and Gorosave Hit Homers as Softball Sweeps Central Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team (18-7, 12-4 in ACCAC) earned its seventh straight win on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader sweep on Tuesday against Central Arizona College (15-9, 13-4).

Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit two home runs on the day and finished with four RBIs. Freshman Bailey Critchlow went 3 for 6 with five RBIs and picked up a win on the mound.

Pima head coach Armando Quiroz picked up his 397th career win at Pima.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 4 (5 innings)

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs scored six runs in the fourth inning and closed out the game with three in the fifth inning.

Down 2-1 in the second inning, freshman Gabriella Gorosave hit a solo homer to tie the game. Freshman Bailey Pavelich (Cienega HS) hit a go-ahead RBI single to score sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) to make it 3-2. Up 7-2 in the fourth inning, Corona hit a two-run homer to plate sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) to make it 9-2.

Corona finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Gorosave was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Peralta finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (8-3) as she pitched five innings giving up four runs (one earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 3

Corona broke open a tie game in the third inning as she nailed a two-run homer to right-center field to make it 3-1. The Aztecs built more of a cushion in the fourth inning when Critchlow hit a three-run RBI double to score freshman Mary Tom (Mountain View HS), freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) and Martinez to make it 6-1. Pavelich added an RBI single to score Peralta in the fifth inning to make it 7-1.

Critchlow finished the game 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two walks. Corona went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Critchlow pitched a complete-game and improved to 9-3 on the year. She went seven innings giving up three runs (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will play at Eastern Arizona College on Saturday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
