Aztecs Softball Go 4-0 at Deanna Mauer Classic; Quiroz Gets 400th Win

The Pima Community College softball team (23-8) dominated the competition on Friday and Saturday at the Deanna Mauer Softball Classic at Paul Mason Park in Casa Grande.

Head Coach Armando Quiroz earned his 400th win as the Pima head coach after the team's second win over El Paso Community College.

Freshman Courtney Brown finished the invitational 5-for-12 with nine RBIs and eight runs scored for the No. 6 ranked Aztecs.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Howard College Bison 3

The Aztecs trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but rallied with three runs and tacked on four runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) hit a two-run homer to tie it at 2-2 while sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI double to give Pima the lead for good. Brown hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning

Brown finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored while Trejo went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Freshman Bailey Critchlow (11-3) picked up the win after she pitched a complete-game giving up three runs (none earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and four walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 11, El Paso CC Tejanos 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs struck with a six-run second inning. Freshman Gabriella Gorosave and Brown each smashed three-run home runs to put Pima up 6-0. Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Gorosave also hit a sacrifice-RBI in the fourth inning and finished 1-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Freshman Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) improved to 2-1 on the mound after she pitched all five innings of shutout ball giving up five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Game 3: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Midland College Chaparrals 3

The Aztecs trailed 3-0 but rallied with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Critchlow tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run RBI double. Gorosave hit an RBI double in the inning while freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) capped it off with a two-run RBI single to make it 6-3. Sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) hit a two-run RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 8-3.

Critchlow went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Olivas finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Corona was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Brown went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Crichlow picked up the win (12-3) as she pitched a complete-game giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 4: Pima CC Aztecs 11, Lake Region College Royals 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs took control early and sophomore pitcher Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) threw a perfect game in five innings pitched. Orduno had seven strikeouts and no walks as she improved to 9-4 on the season.

Martinez hit a two-run RBI single and Critchlow had a two-run RBI double as part of a four-run second inning. Pima scored another four runs in the third inning as Brown hit a two-run RBI double.

Brown finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Martinez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Critchlow was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC conference play on Tuesday when they play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
