Aztecs Softball Take Doubleheader Against North Iowa Area CC

The Pima Community College softball team (26-9) won a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at Lincoln Regional Park against North Iowa Area Community College (8-8).

The Aztecs got plenty of help on offense as freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) finished 5-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Bailey Critchlow was 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Freshman Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) and sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 4, North Iowa Area CC Trojans 2

The Aztecs trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but came back to take the lead for good with a four-run inning. Sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI single and freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) followed with a two-run RBI single to plate Trejo and Martinez. Pima took a 3-2 lead at that point. Sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) added insurance with her RBI single to score Brown.

Brown finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Peralta went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Martinez was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Silvain improved to 3-1 on the season after she pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout and four walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 13, North Iowa Area CC Trojans 2 (5 innings)

The Aztecs took control early with a six-run first inning as the first seven batters reached base and six of them scored runs. Trejo had a two-run RBI double as part of the first inning. Pima took an 8-0 lead after the second inning with RBI singles from Trejo and Martinez. Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) helped seal it with a two run-RBI double in the fifth inning.

Trejo and Martinez were flawless at the plate as they each finished 3-for-3. Trejo had three RBIs and two runs scored while Martinez had two RBIs. Corona went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Critchlow was 2-for-2 with four runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Brown finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Orduno improved to 11-4 on the year as she pitched all five innings giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday when they host Scottsdale Community College at the West Campus. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
