Brown and Corona Help Aztecs Softball Sweep Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (28-9, 16-6 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play and swept a doubleheader against Scottsdale Community College on Saturday at the West Campus.

Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) had a great game at the plate in the first game while Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) took over the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 2 (5 innings)

Brown hit an RBI single to score fellow freshman Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) to cap off a five-run fifth inning to put the mercy-rule in effect. Brown also had an RBI double in the second inning to score sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) to make it 3-0. She added a two-run RBI triple in the fourth inning to widen Pima's lead to 5-2.

Freshman Gabriella Gorosave also contributed with a two-run RBI triple in the fifth inning. Tom and sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) had RBI singles in the fifth.

Brown finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs while Gorosave went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Olivas was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (12-4) after she pitched five innings giving up two runs (two earned) on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 9

The Aztecs trailed 3-0 after the top of the first inning but responded with a seven-run bottom of the inning. Bailey Critchlow hit a two-run RBI double and Martinez hit an RBI single as part of the rally. The Artichokes cut Pima's lead to 10-9 in the sixth but the Aztecs came back in the bottom half. Corona hit a two-run home run to help seal it and an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Corona went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Critchlow finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brown was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two walks.

Critchlow picked up the win and improved to 13-4 on the season. She pitched five and one-third innings giving up nine runs (six earned) on 13 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) earned her second save on the year as she pitched a hitless one and one-third innings with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will play at Yavapai College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
