Gorosave Has Six RBIs as Softball Splits vs. Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (31-12, 19-9 in ACCAC) played in a pair of high-scoring games on Tuesday at the West Campus against Glendale Community College (15-25, 12-20).

The No. 13 ranked Aztecs and the Gauchos combined to score 41 runs on the day. Freshman Gabriella Gorosave had a big day at the plate as she went 6 for 8 with six RBIs. Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) had a big offensive presence in the first game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Glendale CC Gauchos 8

The Aztecs scored six runs in the second inning but the Gauchos rallied to tie the game. Pima scored a run in each the fifth and sixth innings to close it out.

After Glendale scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 8-8, the Aztecs took the lead back in the fifth inning when sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) slid into home plate, just barely beating the throw. Martinez hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to score Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS).

Down 1-0, the Aztecs took the lead after the second inning. Gorosave hit an RBI single and two batters later, Brown hit a three-run RBI triple. Sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) capped off the six-run inning with an RBI double.

Brown finished the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs as she added an RBI single in the fourth inning. Gorosave was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Martinez was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up the win (14-5) and shut out Glendale in the final three innings. She pitched a complete game giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 15 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 12, Pima CC Aztecs 11 (9 innings)

Down 12-10 in the ninth inning, Gorosave hit an RBI single to drive in Martinez but next three batters got out to end the game.

The Aztecs trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Gorosave stepped up and smashed a three-run home run to put Pima back on top 7-6. Trejo and Martinez scored the runs and hit singles earlier in the inning. Freshman Bailey Critchlow added to the lead with a leadoff solo home run in the sixth inning. The Aztecs gave up three runs in the top of the seventh and trailed 9-8. Peralta hit an RBI single to force extra innings.

Glendale scored in the top of the eighth but the Aztecs responded when Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Crichlow to make it 10-10. The Gauchos countered with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Gorosave finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs while Critchlow went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Orduno took the loss (14-6) as she pitched the ninth inning and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with one walk. Critchlow started and went eight innings giving up 10 runs (five earned) on 15 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will host Arizona Western College in an ACCAC doubleheader on Thursday at the West Campus. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
