Brown Has Seven RBIs as Softball Splits at South Mountain

The Pima Community College softball team (33-14, 21-11 in ACCAC) scored 26 runs on Saturday at South Mountain Community College (15-27, 12-20) but split the ACCAC doubleheader.

Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) finished the day 5 for 10 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) went 5 for 7 with five runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 18, South Mountain CC Cougars 0 (5 innings)

The No. 16 ranked Aztecs earned a mercy-rule shutout in the first game. Brown hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run fourth inning and finished the game 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) also hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning as she went 1 for 1 with four RBIs, three runs scored and three walks. Martinez was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman Bailey Critchlow (16-5) picked up the win after she pitched three innings giving up one hit with two walks. Freshman Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) closed it out throwing the final two innings giving up four hits.

Game 2: South Mountain CC Cougars 10, Pima CC Aztecs 8

The Aztecs rallied to take the lead in the fourth and fifth innings but the Cougars scored four runs in the sixth inning to close it out.

Down 4-2 in the top of the fourth, Critchlow hit a two-run RBI double to put the Aztecs ahead 5-4 and scored on sophomore Christine Olivas' (Hamilton HS) RBI single. South Mountain tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Pima retook the lead in the fifth inning when Brown hit a two-run RBI double to make it 8-6.

Brown finished the game 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Critchlow was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Martinez went 3 for 3 with three runs scored while freshman Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Critchlow pitched in relief and took the loss (16-6). She pitched the sixth inning giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk. Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) started the game and went five innings giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits with two walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host No. 2 ranked Phoenix College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
