Trejo Has Six RBIs as Softball's Second Game is Suspended

The Pima Community College softball team (33-15, 21-12 in ACCAC) played a grueling ACCAC doubleheader at the West Campus on Tuesday against conference rival Phoenix College.

The two teams played for almost six hours before the second game was suspended on a 12-12 tie in the top of the eighth inning. The ACCAC Executive Board was make a decision whether to call the game a tie or if Phoenix College will have to come back to the West Campus and finish the game at a later date.

Freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) finished the day 5 for 6 with six RBIs.

Game 1: (2) Phoenix College Bears 18, (16) Pima CC Aztecs 7

The Aztecs led most of the game but the Bears scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh inning to take control.

Trejo put the Aztecs on the board with a two-run RBI double in the first inning and later hit an RBI single in the third to put Pima up 3-1. She drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth inning to make it 4-1.

In the fifth inning, sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single that was followed by freshman Bailey Critchlow's two-run RBI single to make it 7-3. The Bears scored three in the sixth inning to close the gap to 7-6.

Trejo finished the game 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a walk while Peralta also went 3 for 3. She scored three runs and had an RBI. Critchlow was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Brown finished 3 for 5 with a run scored.

Critchlow took the loss as she pitched six innings giving up 10 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) pitched one inning and gave up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with one strikeout.

Game 2: (16) Pima CC Aztecs 12, (2) Phoenix College Bears 12 (game suspended due to darkness):

The Aztecs rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game. With two outs, freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) and sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) drew back-to-back walks. Freshman Gabriella Gorosave stepped up and hit a two-run RBI double to cut the deficit to 12-11. She advanced to third base and later scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) came in as a pinch runner but was tagged out at home plate to end the inning.

The Aztecs scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second and two in the third to take a 9-1 advantage but the Bears came back with three runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth inning to tie it at 9-9.

Trejo hit a two-run RBI single which was followed by Corona's three-run home run to put the Aztecs ahead 5-1 in the first inning. Gorosave hit an RBI double and later scored on Tom's RBI single to make it 9-1 in the third inning.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Saturday when they host an ACCAC doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
