Pacheco and Brown Each Have Six RBIs as Softball Wins Wild Doubleheader at Central AZ
The Pima Community College softball team (39-15, 27-12 in ACCAC) played in a pair of shootouts on Saturday at Central Arizona College (25-25, 23-19).
The No. 19 ranked Aztecs scored 29 runs on the day as freshman Amy Pacheco went 4 for 6 with six RBIs. Fellow freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) was 5 for 10 with six RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up two wins on the mound in relief appearances.
Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 20, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 18 (12 innings)
In the top of the 12th inning with one out, sophomore Christian Olivas (Hamilton HS) hit a groundout to score sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS). Freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) followed with a solo home run.
Orduno got a groundout and two pop-ups in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.
The Aztecs scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-8 lead. Freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Brown hit an RBI double and freshman Bailey Critchlow hit a two-run RBI double. The Vaqueras tied it with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Aztecs and the Vaqueras each scored one run in the eighth, one in the 10th and three runs in the 11th.
Pacheco finished the game 4 for 4 with five RBIs, two runs scored and a three-run homer in the third inning. Brown was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Trejo went 2 for 6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Corona went 5 for 7 with three RBIs and three runs scored while sophomore Kalynn Martinez finished 3 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Orduno picked up the win (16-7) as she threw the final six innings in relief giving up 10 runs (seventh earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 9, Central Arizona College Vaqueras 7
The Aztecs had to break open a tie once again to help seal the win. With the game tied at 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Corona led it off with a double. Martinez followed with an RBI single to score pinch runner Mary Tom (Mountain View HS). With two outs, Brown hit an RBI single to score Martinez.
Orduno set the Vaqueras down in order with a lineout, groundout and a strikeout to end it.
The Aztecs trailed 4-1 but tied it with a three-run fourth inning. Pacheco hit a sacrifice-fly RBI and Brown hit a two-run RBI single to make it 4-4. In the fifth inning, trailing 6-4, Trejo hit an RBI double and Martinez hit a game-tying RBI single. In the sixth, Olivas hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score pinch runner Morgan Engelhardt to put Pima ahead 7-6.
Brown went 3 for 5 with three RBIs while Martinez finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Corona was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Olivas and Trejo each finished 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Orduno picked up the win (17-7) as she pitched another four innings in relief giving up two runs (two earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Tuesday when they host Eastern Arizona College in an ACCAC doubleheader. Games are at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
