Aztecs Softball Splits at Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (41-17, 29-14 in ACCAC) split on the road on Saturday at Arizona Western College (41-13, 35-9) in Yuma.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Arizona Western College Matadors 1

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs trailed early but fought back in the later innings to pick up the win. Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, freshman Amy Pacheco (Sahuaro HS) hit an RBI single to tie it at 1-1. Pima scored a run in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Pacheco finished 1 for 3 with an RBI while sophomore Christine Olivas (Hamilton HS) went 3 for 5 with an RBI single in the seventh and a run scored. Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) was 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk.

Sophomore Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) threw a complete-game giving up one run (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. She improved to 19-7 on the season.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 5, Pima CC Aztecs 1

The Aztecs struggled to put together consistent offense as they dropped the second game to the Matadors. The Aztecs struck first when freshman Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) hit an RBI double to score fellow freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS). Arizona Western rallied from there. Pima had four hits for the game.

Trejo went 1 for 3 with an RBI while Brown, Pacheco and sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) each went 1 for 3.

Freshman Luisa Silvain took the loss (5-2) as she pitched a complete game giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

The Aztecs have locked up the No. 2 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament in a few weeks. They'll play two home games next week at the West Campus to close out the regular season.

Pima will host GateWay Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
