Corona Hits Two Homers, Has Eight RBIs as Softball Sweeps GateWay CC

The Pima Community College softball team (43-17, 31-14 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC doubleheader sweep against GateWay Community College (11-43-1, 6-40) on Tuesday at the West Campus.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs were led by freshman Margarita Corona (Tucson Magnet HS), who hit two home runs with eight RBIs and four runs scored on the day. Sophomore pitcher Odalis Orduno (Desert View HS) picked up two shutout wins in eight innings pitched.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 9, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs jumped to an early lead after scoring five runs in the first inning. Freshman Bailey Critchlow hit a two-run RBI triple which was followed by freshman Gabriela Trejo's (Desert View HS) RBI double. Corona stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run home run to make it 5-0.

In the third inning, Trejo hit an RBI triple and Corona followed with an RBI double. Freshman Gabriella Gorosave hit an RBI single to make it 8-0.

Corona finished the game 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Araceli Peralta (Tucson Magnet HS) went 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Trejo was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Orduno picked up her 20th win of the season (20-7) after she pitched four innings giving up one hit with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 17, GateWay CC Geckos 0 (5 innings)

The Aztecs erupted for 13 runs in the first inning to take control and won their second mercy-rule game of the day.

Corona hit a two-run homer and had a ground RBI in the first inning. Critchlow hit a two-run RBI double and later jacked a three-run homer to make it 11-0. Freshman Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) and sophomore Kalynn Martinez (Sunnyside HS) each hit RBI doubles in the inning.

The Aztecs tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Morgan Engelhardt hit a lead-off home run (her first at Pima) to make it 14-0. Later in the inning, Corona hit a two-run RBI single and Martinez followed with her second RBI double of the game.

Corona finished the game 3 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Critchlow went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and three runs scored while Martinez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a run scored and two doubles. Trejo and Brown each finished 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored and Peralta went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Orduno started and picked up the win (21-7) as she pitched four innings giving up one hit.

The Aztecs will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College at the West Campus. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m. After the final game, the Aztecs will recognize its five sophomores (Engelhardt, Martinez, Christine Olivas, Orduno and Peralta).
