Aztecs softball opens ACCAC conference play with split at Arizona Western College

The Pima Community College softball team (4-3, 1-1 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Tuesday in Yuma.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs split with Arizona Western College. The Aztecs were shut out in the first game and rallied in the second game to earn the victory.

Game 1 Arizona Western College Matadors 6, Pima CC Aztecs 0: The Aztecs managed seven hits on offense but couldn't bring in any runs. Freshman Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) went 2 for 3. Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS), Bailey Critchlow, Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS), Gabriella Gorosave and Mary Tom (Mountain View HS) each had a hit.

The Matadors scored three runs in the third inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth inning.

Critchlow took the loss (2-1) as she pitched five innings giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2 Pima CC Aztecs 5, Arizona Western College Matadors 4: Freshman pitcher Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) struck out the final batter as the Matadors stranded a runner on third base to end it.

The Aztecs fell behind 2-0 but took the lead in the fifth inning. Freshman Alyssa Smith (Winslow HS) walked and later scored on an error. Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) hit a two-run RBI single to put Pima up 3-2. The Matadors tied it at 3-3 after the sixth inning.

Critchlow and Corona led off the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. Freshmen Alyse Talamanate and Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) hit RBI singles to put the Aztecs back up for good at 5-3.

Corona finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Talamante was also 3 for 4 with an RBI. Critchlow went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Arviso finished 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Lorenson pitched a complete-game giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.

The Aztecs will host their first home doubleheader on Saturday at the West Campus against Glendale Community College. The games will be at noon and 2:00 p.m.
