Brown and Corona spark Aztecs softball in split vs. Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College softball team (17-12, 11-9 in ACCAC) earned a split at the West Campus field on Saturday against Paradise Valley Community College (10-10, 10-10).

Sophomore Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with four RBIs. Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) picked up a win on the mound.

Game 1: Paradise Valley C Pumas 8, Pima CC Aztecs 4: The Pumas broke open a tie with seven runs in the sixth inning. The Aztecs rallied in the late innings but came up short.

Freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single in the third inning to tie it at 1-1.

Corona hit RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson HS) hit an RBI double in the fifth.

Corona went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Flores was also 2 for 3 with an RBI while Rodriguez finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Sophomore Luisa Silvain (Cholla HS) took the loss (2-3) after she pitched four-plus innings giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with one strikeout.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 5 (6 innings): The Aztecs responded with a mercy-rule victory in the second game. They capped off the win with four runs in the sixth inning.

The Aztecs scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Freshman Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) contributed with a two-run RBI single in the sixth.

Brown finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Corona and Prieto were each 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Rodriguez, sophomore Bailey Critchlow and MaryAlys Julian (Gila Ridge HS) each scored two runs.

Lorenson picked up the win (4-3) as she pitched the first two innings giving up one run (none earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and six walks. Freshman Hannah Freer (Sabino HS) threw four innings giving up three runs (three earned) on six hits.

The Aztecs will play at South Mountain Community College on Tuesday in Phoenix. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
