Corona and Flores homer but Aztecs softball win-streak snapped at Yavapai College

The Pima Community College softball team (27-14, 21-11 in ACCAC) ran into a buzz-saw on Tuesday in its ACCAC conference doubleheader at Yavapai College (33-4, 29-3).

The Aztecs were swept by the No. 10 ranked Roughriders ending Pima's 11-game winning streak. The Aztecs managed just three runs and nine hits on the day.

Game 1: (10) Yavapai College Roughriders 9, Pima CC Aztecs 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs tied the game in the third inning at 1-1 but the Roughriders scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added two in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Bailey Critchlow had an RBI double and finished 1 for 2. The Aztecs had four hits for the game as sophomores Margarita Corona (Tucson HS) and Gabriela Trejo (Desert View HS) as well as freshman Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) each went 1 for 2.

Critchlow took the loss (13-6) as she pitched all five innings giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with two walks.

Game 2: (10) Yavapai College Roughriders 4, Pima CC Aztecs 2: The Aztecs took an early lead when Corona hit a solo home run in the first inning. The Roughriders got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Flores cut into Yavapai's lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning to make it 3-2. The Roughriders tacked on another run in the fifth inning.

The Aztecs had five hits for the game. Corona and Flores each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Courtney Brown (Flowing Wells HS) and Critchlow each finished 1 for 3 while sophomore Larissa Rodriguez (Tucson HS) went 1 for 2.

Freshman Mandy Lorenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) took the loss (8-4) as she pitched a complete-game giving up four runs (four earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

The Aztecs will play at GateWay Community College on Saturday in Phoenix at noon and 2:00 p.m.
