Caldera drives in seven runs as Aztecs softball sweeps Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (6-7, 4-4 in ACCAC) scored 27 runs on Tuesday in its ACCAC doubleheader sweep against Scottsdale Community College (4-12, 2-12).
Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) was unstoppable at the plate as she went 6 for 8 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. Pitchers Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) and Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 14, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 1 (5 innings): The offense dominated as Pima scored three runs in the 1st inning, six in the 2nd inning and five in the 3rd to earn the run-rule victory.
    Freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) hit a two-run RBI double in the 1st inning. Caldera knocked in two runs with her RBI double to make it 5-0 in the 2nd inning. Freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) drilled a three-run homer in the 3rd to help put the game away.
    Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) hit a pair of RBI singles as she finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Caldera also went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. She scored three runs for the game.
    Adams was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Turner-Vizcarra was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run while freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
    Castillo picked up the win (4-2) as she threw all five innings giving up one run (none earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 3 (5 innings): Caldera hit a grand slam in the 5th inning to secure the run-rule victory.
    The Aztecs trailed 3-0 after the 1st inning but scored seven in the 4th inning and five in the 5th.
    Casper put the Aztecs ahead for good when she drove in Adams and Angulo on a RBI single to make it 4-3.Caldera hit an RBI double while Angelo and sophomore Mackenzie Judge (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit RBI singles in the inning.
    Caldera finished 4 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Casper went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS), Judge and Angelo each went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Angelo scored two runs and Durazo-Corday and Judge each had one run.
    Nerey was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs but she also pitched the final four and two-third innings of shutout ball as she gave up one hit with five strikeouts and two walks. She got eight of the final nine batters out to get the win (2-1).

The Aztecs will play at Paradise Valley Community College on Thursday in a make-up doubleheader from last Saturday. The games will be at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m
