Aztecs softball rallies in the second game to earn split at Paradise Valley CC

The Pima Community College softball team (7-8, 5-5 in ACCAC) were stifled in its first game but rallied in the late innings of the second game to salvage the doubleheader at Paradise Valley Community College (3-13, 3-13).
Sophomore Alese Casper finished the day 5 for 9 with two RBIs, a stolen base and a win on the mound.

  • Game 1: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 5, Pima CC Aztecs 0: The offense struggled as they managed just two hits for the game.
    Casper produced both hits for the game. She led off the 1st inning with a single but the Aztecs stranded two runners in the inning. She hit another leadoff single in the 3rd inning. She finished the game 2 for 3 with a stolen base.
    Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS), Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) and Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS) each drew a walk.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (4-3) took the loss as she pitched six innings giving up five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 9: The Aztecs trailed 7-3 after the 4th inning but rallied with seven runs in the 5th, one in the 6th and four runs in the 7th.
    The Aztecs got the first two runners on base in the 5th and sophomore Mackenzie Judge (Ironwood Ridge HS) hit a two-run RBI double. She later tied the game at 7-7 after scoring on a wild pitch.
    Casper put the Aztecs up with a two-run RBI single scoring freshmen Hope Adams (Benson HS) and Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS).
    Up 10-7, Durazo-Corday hit a leadoff home run to open the 6th inning.
    The Pumas cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the 6th but the Aztecs responded in the 7th. Caldera, Judge, Adams and sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) all had RBI hits to help put the game away.
    Judge finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Durazo-Corday was 2 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Casper finished 3 for 6 with two RBIs.
    Casper picked up the win on the mound (1-2) after she pitched the final three and one-third innings of the game. She gave up two runs (two earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Saturday when they host an ACCAC Division I doubleheader against Eastern Arizona College. First pitch is at noon.
