Durazo-Corday and Caldera go yard twice as Aztecs softball splits with Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team (8-9, 6-6 in ACCAC) played a wild ACCAC Division I doubleheader on Saturday against Eastern Arizona College (14-11, 10-6).
The Aztecs and the Gila Monsters combined for 28 runs in the first game. Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) and Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) combined to go 6 for 8 with eight RBIs with seven runs scored and four home runs in the game.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 17, Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 14: The Aztecs were forced to post big innings and were able to overcome the Gila Monsters.
    The Aztecs scored nine runs in the 2nd inning to take a 9-4 lead. Durazo-Corday hit a three-run homer to cap off the inning.
    The Gila Monsters scored six runs in the 3rd inning, one in the 4th inning and three runs in the 5th to take a 14-10 lead.
    The Aztecs' offense produced again scoring seven runs in the 6th. Durazo-Corday led off the inning with a solo home run. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double to tie it at 14-14. Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) followed with an RBI double to plate Turner-Vizcarra and the next at-bat, Caldera, stepped up and blasted a two-run homer.
    Caldera hit a solo home run in the 4th inning and finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Durazo-Corday was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Turner-Vizcarra was 1 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Marshall finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
    Sophomore Alese Casper picked up the win (2-2) as she pitched the final four and one-third innings giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with four walks.

  • Game 2: Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters 5, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Gila Monsters broke a tie in the top of the 7th inning to help claim the second game.
    Down 2-0, the Aztecs tied the game in the 2nd inning with back-to-back RBI hits from Casper and Turner-Vizcarra.
    In the 3rd inning, Caldera led it off with a double and later scored when freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) hit an RBI single to give the Aztecs a 3-2 advantage.
    Casper was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Adams finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) went 1 for 2 with a run scored.
    Freshman pitcher Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (4-4) as she pitched seven innings giving up five runs (five earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Tuesday when they host Glendale Community College for an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
