Aztecs softball picks up two non-conference wins at Tucson Invitational

The Pima Community College softball team (12-9) switched gears as it played two non-conference games as part of the Tucson Invitational on Thursday at Lincoln Park.
Freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) continued her hot streak at the plate as she finished the day 4 for 6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Pitchers Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) and Alese Casper had solid outings on the mound.

  • Pima CC Aztecs 5, Madonna University Reserve Team 3: The Aztecs rallied to score three runs in the 4th inning to take the lead for good.
    Sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) hit an RBI double to score Marshall to put the Aztecs on the board. Fellow sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday (Pueblo HS) followed with a game-tying RBI single to plate Caldera. Later in the inning with one out, freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) put the Aztecs up 3-2 with an RBI single that scored sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS).
    The Aztecs padded their lead when freshman Kylee Leach drove in Munoz with an RBI hit in the 6th inning. Freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) drove in Marshall with an RBI single in the 7th to make it 5-2.
    Nerey, a freshman, picked up the win on the mound (4-1) as she threw a complete-game giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

  • Pima CC Aztecs 9, College of Lake County 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs' bats sprung to life in the first three innings as they earned a run-rule victory.
    Marshall put Pima on the board with a two-run RBI double in the 1st inning to score Casper and freshman Amaya Turner-Vizacarra (Tucson HS). Then she went on to hit a bases-clearing three-run RBI double in the 2nd inning to make it 6-0.
    Leach and freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) contributed with RBI singles as part of their six-run 2nd inning. The Aztecs led 8-0.
    Turner-Vizcarra hit an RBI triple in the 3rd inning to score sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS).
    Marshall was 2 for 2 with five RBIs, a run scored and two doubles. Turner-Vizcarra went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Angulo also finished 2 for 2 with an RBI. Gomez was 1 for 1 with two runs while Casper went 1 for 2 with two runs and two walks.
    Casper earned her fourth straight win on the mound (4-2) after she pitched four innings giving up one run (none earned) on six hits with two strikeouts.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday when they travel to Phoenix College for a doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
