Aztecs softball falls at No. 3 Phoenix College

The Pima Community College softball team (12-11, 8-8 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday but fell on the road to Phoenix College (19-3, 18-2) (Division II).
The Aztecs scored three runs on eight hits for the day. Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) was 2 for 5 with an RBI and two walks.

  • Game 1: (3) Phoenix College Bears 7, Pima CC Aztecs 0: The Aztecs' bats went silent in the first game as they managed two hits and one walk. They left three runners on base.
    Caldera and freshman Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) each went 1 for 3. Freshman Hope Adams (Benson HS) was 0 for 2 with a walk.
    Freshman Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (4-5) as she pitched six innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) on eight hits with three walks.

  • Game 2: (3) Phoenix College Bears 7, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Bears broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the 6th inning.
    The Aztecs got on the board with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning with two outs. Sophomore Janice Garcia (Rio Rico HS) and freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored on back-to-back wild pitches to give the Aztecs a 2-0 lead.
    The Aztecs took the lead again in the 5th inning. Sophomore Alese Casper hit a leadoff double and with two outs, was driven home by Caldera's RBI single to make it 3-2. The Bears tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 5th.
    Caldera was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Casper finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and a walk. Munoz went 1 for 2 with a run scored and sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) was 2 for 3.
    Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (4-2) as she pitched six innings giving up seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will hit the road again on Tuesday when they play at South Mountain Community College. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. in Phoenix.
