Aztecs Softball drops final two games at Great Western Shootout

The Pima Community College softball team (4-5) closed out play in the Great Western Shootout on Saturday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex in Yuma.
The Aztecs fell in their final two games after scoring three runs off 10 hits for the day.

  • Snow College Badgers 8, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (6 innings): The Aztecs managed just one hit for the game as freshman Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the 6th inning. She finished the game 1 for 2 at the plate.
    Freshman Yanelyssia Chavez (Salpointe Catholic HS) took the loss as she pitched four innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

  • College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles 7, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs took the lead in the 5th inning, but the Golden Eagles scored five unanswered runs in the late innings.
    Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) tied the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning with a solo home run to center field.
    The Aztecs scored two more runs in the 5th inning as sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) drove an RBI double to bring in freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS). The Aztecs loaded the bases when sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) was hit by a pitch and freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) drew a walk. Noriega hit a sacrifice-fly out to left field, which brought in Zepeda and put the Aztecs up 3-1.
    The Golden Eagles tied it with two runs in the top of the 6th inning and took the advantage with three runs in the 7th inning.
    Noriega finished the game 1 for 3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Zepeda was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Martin went 0 for 2 with two walks and a run.
    Freshman Nevaeah Bracamonte took the loss as she pitched a complete-game, giving up six runs (six earned) on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will continue to log travel miles as they play in the El Paso CC Invitational from Feb. 9-10. All games at El Paso Community College They will face off against host Tejanas on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and then go up against Cisco College at 2:00 p.m.
