Talia Martin scores five runs as Aztecs Softball earns two wins to open El Paso Invitational

The Aztecs Softball team picked up two run rule wins in the first day of the El Paso CC Invitational. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) went 4 for 7 with five runs scored, two RBIs and two home runs in the lead-off spot while freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) pitched five innings, giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks in the second game win. The Pima Community College softball team (6-5) picked up two victories on Friday in the opening day of the El Paso Community Invitational.
The Aztecs outscored El Paso Community College and Cisco College 19-2 on the day. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) was a strong component in the lead-off spot going 4 for 7 with five runs scored, two RBIs and two home runs. Sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) finished the day 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshmen pitchers Ailani Rodriguez (Rio Rico HS) and Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) picked up the wins on the mound.

  • Pima CC Aztecs 10, El Paso CC Tejanos 1 (6 innings): The Aztecs busted the game open with six runs in the 4th inning. Sophomore Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Marina Price (Rincon/University HS). Salazar followed with an inside-the-park home run that brought in freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) Majonica, and herself to make it 6-0. Martin followed with her second home run of the game, driving the first pitch she saw to left field and pushing Pima's lead to 7-0. Freshman Alyssa Lopez hit a single and advanced to third base on a stolen base and a defensive interference call. Zylinski-Wrobel groundout out but was able to bring her in to cap off the inning.
    Martin led off the game with a home run to right field in the 1st inning to put Pima up. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a two-out double in the 3rd inning and scored on a stolen base to make it 2-0.
    Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) and Ortiz hit back-to-back RBI singles in the 6th inning to help seal it.
    Martin finished the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Salazar was 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run. Zepeda was 2 for 4 with two runs and Majonica went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Ortiz finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
    Rodriguez picked up the win as she pitched five and one-third innings, giving up one run (one earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk on 81 pitches.

  • Pima CC Aztecs 9, Cisco College 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs took the lead again in the 1st inning and didn't relinquish.
    With outs in the 1st inning, Zylinski-Wrobel hit an RBI triple to score Martin. Waddell followed with an RBI single to bring her in. Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) capped off the inning with an RBI single to put the Aztecs up 3-0.
    Zylinski-Wrobel and Waddell provided the offensive firepower again in the 4th inning. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a two-run RBI double to bring around Martin and Zepeda. Waddell drove her in with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
    Freshman Aubrey Marx Cienega HS) hit a two-run RBI triple in the 5th inning and later stole home plate to score a run.
    Zylinski-Wrobel and Waddell combined to go 4 for 6 with five RBIs and three runs scored in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the lineup. Marx finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run while Martin was 2 for 3 with three runs scored.
    Waddell also got the win on the mound as she pitched all five innings, giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will close out play at the El Paso CC Invitational on Saturday when they play Cisco College at 11:30 a.m. and close out the day against host El Paso Community College at 2:00 p.m.
