Waddell tosses complete-game, Lopez scores four runs as Softball sweeps Dawson CC for eighth straight win

The Pima Community College softball team (17-8) won its eighth straight game on Wednesday as it played in the TIG Invitational held at Lincoln Regional Park.
The Aztecs won a doubleheader against Dawson Community College (MT). Freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS) finished the day 2 for 5 with an RBI and four runs scored while sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Freshmen Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) and Nevaeah Bracamonte picked up the wins in the circle.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 5, Dawson CC Buccaneers 1: The Aztecs scored four runs in the 4th inning, which proved to be the difference.
    Up 1-0, freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) reached base on an error, which drove in Waddell and Chacon. Lopez followed with an RBI double to bring in Rivera. She scored a run of her own to make it 5-0 after freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) grounded out.
    Chacon hit a solo home run in the 2nd inning to put the Aztecs on the board as she finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lopez went 1 for 3 with an RBI and run while Rivera closed it out going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
    Waddell picked up the win after she pitched a complete-game, giving up one run (one earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and one walk on 106 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Dawson CC Buccaneers 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored four runs in the 2nd inning and earned the run-rule win with two in the 4th inning and three runs in the 5th.
    Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) continued to showcase her offensive power as she hit a three-run homer in the 2nd inning bringing around Martin and freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS). Martin hit a double earlier in the inning as Pima led 5-0.
    Marx and Zepeda had back-to-back RBI hits in the 4th inning. Freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) drilled an RBI double in the 5th inning while freshman Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) and Lopez scored off of errors in the inning.
    Zepeda finished the game going 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a run scored while Lopez went 1 for 2 with three runs scored. Martin was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Waddell and Ortiz each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Marx was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
    Bracamonte got the win as she pitched three innings, giving up two hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 52 pitches.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field on Saturday when they host Eastern Arizona College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
