Chacon has nine RBIs as Softball scores 42 runs to beat GateWay CC for 16th straight win

The Pima Community College softball team (25-8, 12-2 in ACCAC) tied its season-high in runs scored in two straight games on Saturday against GateWay Community College (8-17, 5-12) at the West Campus Aztec Field.
The Aztecs scored a season-high two game stretch of 42 runs as they won their 16th straight game. Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the day 6 for 8 with nine RBIs, five runs scored, two home runs and two doubles. Freshman Stephany Montoya (Kofa HS) was 3 for 5 with six RBIs and four runs scored. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) finished 3 for 7 with six runs scored, three steals and two RBIs. The Aztecs hit seven homers for the day.

  • Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 21, GateWay CC Geckos 1 (5 innings): The Aztecs scored in every inning and never less than three runs.
    Up 3-0, the Aztecs took control with six runs in the 2nd inning. Chacon hit her first home run, which was a two-run shot to score Zepeda and make it 8-0. Sophomore Kayla Miranda (Tucson Magnet HS) followed with a solo home run to cap the inning.
    The Aztecs tacked on another nine runs in the 3rd inning. Chacon drilled her second home run as she sent a three-run shot over the fence bringing in Zepeda and sophomore Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells HS) to make it 15-0. Later in the inning, freshman Monique Bustamante (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit her own three-run homer to plate Montoya and freshman Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) to put it at 18-0.
    Montoya capped off the offensive barrage in the 4th inning with a three-run shot scoring Majonica and Miranda.
    Chacon finished the game 3 for 4 with six RBIs and three runs scored while Miranda was a flawless 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Bustamante was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs and Montoya went 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Zepeda closed it out going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) finished 2 for 2 with three runs and fellow freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs.
    Thompson picked up the win as she pitched all five innings, giving up one run (one earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk on 85 pitches.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 21, GateWay CC Geckos 6 (5 innings): The Aztecs rallied by scoring 21 straight runs to take control and earn their second run-rule win of the day.
    Down 4-0, the Aztecs scored eight runs in the bottom-half of the 1st inning.
    Montoya hit an RBI single to score freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) as Pima took a 5-4 lead. Freshman Marina Price (Rincon/University HS) followed with a two-run homer to score Montoya and make it 7-4.
    The offense exploded for 10 runs in the 2nd inning. Montoya and freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) each hit back-to-back two-run RBI doubles to make it 14-4. Later in the inning, freshman Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a three-run home run scoring Zepeda and Chacon to make it 18-4.
    The Aztecs scored three runs in the 4th inning to help secure the win. Chacon hit a two-run RBI double bringing around sophomore Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) and freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS).
    Asher finished the game 3 for 4 with six RBIs and three runs scored while Chacon was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Montoya went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Ortiz, Price and Rivera each had two RBIs and two runs scored. Salazar and Lopez were each 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Zepeda closed it out at 1 for 3 with three runs.
    Freshman Jesse Gonzales (Willcox HS) got the win as she pitched four and one-third innings in relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout.

The Aztecs will play their third straight ACCAC doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday against Mesa Community College. First game starts at noon.
