Aztecs Softball has 26-game winning streak snapped at Central Arizona College

The Pima Community College softball team's (35-10, 22-4 in ACCAC) improbable winning streak came to an end on Tuesday at Central Arizona College (18-17, 14-14).
The Aztecs got swept on the day in Coolidge. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) extended her hitting streak to 21 games as she finished 2 for 6 on the day. Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) closed out the day going 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fellow freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and a run. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) drew four walks.

  • Game 1: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 4, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The Aztecs' 26-game winning came to an end after the first game loss.
    Pima took the lead in the 7th inning when Rivera hit an RBI single to drive in pinch runner Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) to put Pima up 3-2.
    The Vaqueras tied the game with a sacrifice-fly RBI with two outs, and two batters later hit a walk-off RBI double that ended the game.
    The Aztecs fell behind 2-0 but got on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when Marx hit a sacrifice-fly to plate Rivera. Martin hit a sac-fly RBI to tie the game at 2-2 in the 5th inning, which brought in pinch runner Bella Medina (Canyon del Oro HS).
    Rivera finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Marx went 1 for 3 with an RBI while Martin had an RBI and two walks. Zepeda hit a leadoff single in the 6th inning and was 1 for 4.
    Freshman Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) took the loss as she pitched six and two-third innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

  • Game 2: Central Arizona College Vaqueras 10, Pima CC Aztecs 2 (5 innings): The Vaqueras took control with four runs in the 3rd inning and ended the game with five runs in the 5th inning for the run-rule win.
    The Aztecs tied the game in the 3rd inning when Marx hit an RBI single to score Rivera, who led off the inning with single. Zepeda kept her hitting streak alive with a single in the 3rd inning.
    Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) hit an RBI single in the 5th inning to plate Marx as Pima trailed 5-2 at that point heading into the bottom of the inning.
    Marx finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Rivera went 1 for 2 with a run. Zepeda was 1 for 2 with a walk and Waddell finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Martin drew two more walks in the game.
    Waddell took the loss as she pitched four and one-third innings, giving up nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

The Aztecs face a tough test on Saturday when they play at Eastern Arizona College. First game of the ACCAC doubleheader starts at 12:00 p.m.
