Chacon and Martin provide clutch hits, Waddell goes the distance as Softball beats ABAC to open NJCAA World Series

The Pima Community College softball team (43-12) opened play at the NJCAA Division I World Series on Monday in Oxford, AL.

  • The No. 14 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 19 Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College 7-5 in the first round.
  • The Aztecs scored one or two runs in each of the first five innings. Freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) scored on an error to put Pima on the board. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) made it 2-0 in the 2nd inning with a sacrifice-fly RBI to freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS), who led off the inning with a single.
  • The Fillies (34-17) tied the game with two runs on an error and took the lead with RBI single from Ava Roland.
  • Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) help counter in the bottom-half of the 3rd inning as she hit a two-run RBI single to score freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) and Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) to put the Aztecs back up at 4-3. Waddell reached base on a fielder's choice and Zylinski-Wrobel hit a double to put them in scoring position.
  • The Aztecs added to their lead in the 4th inning when Martin hit a lead-off single and scored on Marx's RBI double. Martin provided more insurance in the 5th inning when she hit a two-run RBI double to score Chacon and freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS), who each drew walks earlier in the inning.
  • Martin finished the game 2 for 2 with three RBIs and a run scored while Chacon went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. Marx was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Zepeda pushed her hitting streak to 31 games as she finished 2 for 4. Zylinski-Wrobel closed out the game at 1 for 4 with a run and Noriega was 1 for 2 with a run.
  • Waddell pitched a complete game, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 128 pitches.

The Aztecs advance to the second round where they will play No. 3 seeded Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday at Choccolocco Park. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT); 11:00 a.m. Tucson time.
