PCC women's basketball season ends in Region semifinals

The Pima Community College women's basketball dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday in the Region I, Division II semifinals match-up.

With 0.7 seconds left, Heather Rogers (Navajo Prep HS) in-bounded the ball to Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) and her shot fell off the mark as the No. 1 seeded Aztecs lost to No. 4 Phoenix College 55-53. It ended Pima's six-year streak of being in the Region I, Division II championship game.

The Aztecs fell behind by as much as 13 points at 50-37 with 6:03 left in the game but the Aztecs rallied, going on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 1:41 left. Rogers scored 10 points during that stretch which included a three-pointer, a steal and a three-point play in a matter of seconds. Phoenix College hit a three-pointer to retake the lead. With the score at 55-51, Baldwin hit two of three free throws but the ball went out-of-bounds to Phoenix.

The Aztecs finished the game with 24 turnovers and went 12 for 25 from the free-throw line. Melody McLaughlin (Mountain View HS) scored a team-high 15 points with nine rebounds. Rogers scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and had five steals. Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells HS) contributed with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Aztecs finished the season with 17-14 overall record and it was the first time they were the No. 1 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament since 2011.
