Stallworth Scores 17 but Aztecs Women's Basketball Fall Short at Eastern Arizona College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (6-3, 3-1 in ACCAC) cut into a double digit deficit and took a second half lead but fell short on the road.

The No. 10 ranked Aztecs, a Division II team, lost to Eastern Arizona College (8-3, 5-0), a Division I team, 75-70 in Thatcher on Saturday.

Down 74-70 with 40 seconds left in the game, the Aztecs were called for an offensive foul. Eastern Arizona missed a pair of free throws and sophomore Gabby Banales (Cienega HS) grabbed the defensive rebound but turned it over as Eastern hit a free throw to seal it.

With the game tied at 66-66, Eastern Arizona went on an 8-0 run to put the Aztecs down 74-66 with 1:30 left in the game. Sophomore Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher HS) hit a pair of free throws and sophomore Taylor Blue (Peoria HS) hit a shot to make it 74-70.

The Aztecs trailed by as much as 13 points early in the third quarter. Down 56-46, Pima went on a 12-2 run to end the third and into the fourth quarter. They tied the game at 58-58. Freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde HS) hit a jumper to give the Aztecs a 64-63 lead and she later hit a shot to tie it.

Stallworth finished the game with 17 points while Blue and Banales each had 11 points. Freshman Denesia Smith (Cienega HS) had 10 points and six assists.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus on Wednesday when they host Cochise College at 5:30 p.m.
